Just over three minutes later, Logan could not believe what he was hearing. He leaned forward in his chair until his shadow covered most of the desk.

“Sorry, ma’am. You’re going to have to say that again.”

“Why? Didn’t you hear what I said, Detective Chief Inspector?”

“Oh, I heard what you said, alright, but with all due respect, I can’t quite grasp the absolute fucking stupidity of the idea, and I wanted to make sure that I didn’t imagine it.”

Across the desk, the Detective Superintendent became very still. So still, in fact, that Logan could’ve swapped her out for a cardboard cutout, and nobody coming into the office would’ve been any the wiser.

Under a microscope, it might be possible to make out some sort of movement. An incremental flaring of the nostrils, perhaps. A standing on end of the hair on the back of her neck. A clenching of a dark-skinned jawline that was impressively taut for someone her age.

Truthfully, Logan had expected more of a reaction to his outburst, even as the words were lining up to be deployed. Her predecessor would already have stapled Logan’s tongue to the desk for such a remark, and would now be in the process of driving both thumbs deep into his eye sockets.

It would’ve been worth it, though. What had just come out of Mitchell’s mouth had, without question, been ridiculous enough to merit his reaction.

What was worse was that now, several seconds later, she still hadn’t taken it back. He’d actually hoped she might be joking, but nothing she’d done since suggested that was the case.

“You aren’t serious?” he asked, a little perturbed by her stillness. He’d seen snakes and other venomous creatures freeze like that in nature documentaries. It rarely boded well for anything within striking range. “You can’t really be taking him off the case? We need all the help we can get and, though I never thought I’d say it, he’s one of my best officers.”

“He’s also married to what we have to assume is a victim.”

“I’m aware of that. I was at the wedding, but—”

“Good. Then you appreciate why it’s completely inappropriate for him to be involved in the investigation.”

“No! I don’t!”

“The regulations are very clear on the matter. If an officer—”

“Fuck the regulations!” Logan snapped, not even bothering with the ‘all due respect’ part this time. “Tyler can help. The poor bastard needs to help. It’s the only way he’s getting through this with his sanity in one piece.”

Mitchell clasped her hands so everything from the middle fingers to the pinkies were interlocked. Both index fingers pressed together, pointing in Logan’s direction.

“I appreciate your frustration, Jack. And if we were running a mental health charity, he could absolutely stay on the case. But we’re the constabulary. There are rules. Strict ones. There have to be, or it all falls down around our ears.”

“He’s a good officer,” Logan protested. “He’ll help us get them back. He’ll help us crack this.”

“Oh, Jack, for God’s sake, grow up! Face facts!” Mitchell said, raising her voice to match his own.
